Grizedale Arts / Yangjiang Group, Colisseum of the Consumed (2012)

For Frieze London, Grizedale and Frieze Foundation hosted a programme of food-related performance, discussion, representation and retail which will be called Colisseum of the Consumed. Including new commissions by artists Nicolas Party, Alistair Frost, juneau/projects, Bedwyr Williams, William Pope L, as well as talks by food historians and specialists, plus unique dining opportunities; the project was enclosed in a bespoke structure built by Yangjiang Group. Modelled as a cross between a Roman amphitheatre and a cricket pavilion, viewers were able to watch events unfold from the ground or a platform above. A number of artists, community groups and eccentrics manned stalls around the circumference of the structure, selling their home produce and ideas for alternative eating.

The programme included performances and presentations by artists, chefs, food historians and specialists including Yangjiang Group, Sam Clark (Moro), Alistair Frost, Margot Henderson (Arnold & Henderson), Juneau Projects, Nicolas Party, William Pope.L, Simon Rogan (L’Enclume), Kerry Stewart and Bedwyr Williams.

Stalls were presented by Abbey Gardens Allotments, Pablo Bronstein, Marcus Coates, Coniston Youth Club, Fernando Garcia Dory, Eastside Projects, An Endless Supply, Ruth Höflich, Homeshop Beijing, The Honest Shop at Coniston Institute, Peter Liversidge, My Villages, Deirdre O’Mahoney and Laure Prouvost.

Grizedale Arts is a curatorial project in a continuous state of development. Over the last 30 years it has evolved in response to its particular context; from its origins as an artists residency and sculpture park to its current form as a complex network of international alliances, affinities and programmes emanating from and flowing into its particular location in the heart of the English Lake District.

On the back of its influential residency programme, Grizedale Arts has organised recent projects such as the exhibition ‘Romantic Detachment’ at PS1/MoMA; ‘Seven Samurai’, Japan (Echigo-Tsumari Triennial 2006); ‘Virtual Grizedale’ (Liverpool, 2006), ‘Happystacking’, China, 2008 and ‘The Mechanics Institute’ at the Sao Paulo Bienial. During the same period it has developed its home base and associated programme around the working farm of Lawson Park, working with the village of Coniston on a radical programme of development focussed on the historic Mechanics Institute. The project will be enclosed in a bespoke structure originally built by Yangjiang Group, co-commissioned by Eastside Projects and Grizedale Arts.

Yangjiang Group is an artists group founded in 2002 in Yangjiang, China. Its members are Zheng Guogu, Chen Zaiyan and Sun Qinglin. Recent solo projects and exhibitons include: ‘Yangjiang Group – After Dinner Shu Fa at Cricket Pavilion’, Eastside Projects, Birmingham (2012) and ‘Garden of Pine – Also Fierce Than Tiger II’, Tang Contemporary Art Centre, Beijing (2010). Recent group shows include: Biennales de Lyon 2009 - ‘The Spectacle of the Everyday Life’, Lyon (2009) and ‘Sprout from White Nights’, Bonniers Konsthall, Stockholm (2008).
